Employee’s future 'looks great’ as company pays for driving lessons
The generosity of a Shropshire homebuilder has enabled one of its employees to consider a long term future with the company.
23-year-old Mike Hughes approached Shrewsbury based Saxonby just over a year ago looking for on-site labouring work. Although talented without a driving licence his prospects of working on its various housing projects throughout Shropshire and the region were limited and the likelihood of starting and finishing at its Besford Gardens Shrewsbury development, meant that he probably would have moved on to the next job without promotion or job security. Realising his potential Saxonby directors James Wood and Andrew Copson decided to pay for driving lessons for Hughes, who rewarded their investment by recently passing his test and at the first attempt.
James Wood said: “Mike came to us with or no opportunity to progress beyond basic labouring construction work, based on the fact that he hadn’t got a driving licence. Paying for regular driving lessons can make a dent in a pay packet so relieving him of that burden showed our commitment and that we were prepared to invest in his future with Saxonby. As a result he has flourished and his confidence grown. Now that Mike has passed his test we will be looking to train him further in machine and site vehicle operation and then in the long-term through our management programme, up to assistant site manager status.”
Commenting on his opportunity and future, Mike Hughes said: “Passing my driving test will now allow me the freedom to not only travel to the various sites I will be working at but also the opportunity to carry out more training to increase my value as a Saxonby employee, my contribution to the team and ultimately our customers. I would like to thank the Saxonby directors and my line manager Tom for the support and encouragement they have given me. The future looks great”
