From a chippy to a chippy!! Saxonby takes on a new carpentry apprentice
A Shropshire home builder has appointed its second carpentry apprentice who, as the former owner of a fish and chip shop, a ‘chippy’ used to mean something completely different!
29-year-old Sarbjit Sidhu is the new recruit at Shrewsbury based Saxonby. Having already attained a NVQ level two in carpentry at Shrewsbury College, Sidhu was taken on full-time by the company last December. He is currently dividing his time between working at Saxonby’s Liverpool Road development in Whitchurch and his training provider Shrewsbury College, where he will complete his level three qualification in July.
Commenting on the appointment, Saxonby director Andrew Copson said: “Through his previous positions in debt recovery with RBS and self-employment Sarbjit joins us as a mature apprentice with an additional and invaluable set of life skills and work experience. His decision to change career and self-finance a NVQ level two shows a determination and approach encouraged at Saxonby. We will fund the remainder of his training and he will receive double the recommended pay, a sign of our commitment and investment in the apprenticeships we offer. Depending on our order book, we will also be looking to appoint an apprentice plumber in 2014.”
