Overgrown land gets new lease of life as affordable housing
Work has started on ten new homes at Bridgewater Street, Whitchurch, utilising a piece of land previously overgrown and unused.
A sod-cutting ceremony was held on Friday 06 November by The Wrekin Housing Trust and contractor Saxonby.
The new homes will consist of six houses and four apartments with parking, and will be the culmination of partnership working between the two companies, the landowner and Shropshire Council.
Neighbours and local residents have been extremely positive about the regeneration of the site, which is opposite Tesco and near to the town centre and railway station.
Steve Swann, development manager for The Wrekin Housing Trust, said: “This site is in a great location and we’re really pleased to see work starting on providing affordable homes for the people of Whitchurch. Saxonby is experienced in delivering quality affordable housing so we’re looking forward to working with its team to create some great homes here.”
James Wood, director at Saxonby, said: “This site is a great example of partnership working at its best. Everything has gone very smoothly so far, partly down to the site being so well received. We’ve had lots of positive comments from passers-by and the general public who are interested in the homes we will be creating. We’re looking forward to working with local contractors to help to further benefit the local economy.”
The development of ten homes at Bridgewater Street has a value to the economy of over £2.2 million, creating 23 jobs and an apprenticeship opportunity.
It is expected that the development will be complete and ready for new residents to move into by September 2016.
